Walmart is recalling a significant amount of apple juice sold in 25 states due to elevated levels of arsenic. The recall affects more than 9,500 cases of 100% apple juice that was sold under Walmart’s Great Value brand. The decision comes after testing revealed that the juice contains higher levels of inorganic arsenic than what is considered safe.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has upgraded the recall, which was initially announced on August 15. The FDA’s new classification is Class II, which means that while the product might cause temporary or medically reversible health issues, it is unlikely to result in serious health problems. The recall was triggered because the apple juice contains approximately 13 parts per billion (ppb) of inorganic arsenic. This level is above the FDA’s action level of 10 ppb for safe consumption.

The affected apple juice was sold in six-packs of 8-ounce plastic bottles. These products carry the UPC code 0-78742-29655-5 and have a “Best if used by” date of DEC2824 CT89-6. The recall covers products sold across various states on the East Coast, in the southern United States, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia.

Walmart has acted swiftly to address the issue, removing the recalled apple juice from stores. A Walmart spokesperson emphasized that customer safety is a top priority and mentioned that the company is working closely with the supplier to investigate the situation.

The juice was manufactured by Refresco Beverages US Inc., a company based in the Netherlands with a U.S. headquarters in Tampa, Florida. The company has yet to comment on the recall.

Inorganic arsenic, unlike naturally occurring arsenic, can be harmful and is linked to serious health issues like cancer and birth defects. The FDA notes that inorganic arsenic can sometimes come from contaminated drinking water. Regular exposure to this type of arsenic is concerning and can pose significant health risks.

If you have purchased this apple juice, it is recommended that you return it to the store where you bought it for a refund or exchange. Walmart is working to ensure that all affected products are removed from the shelves and will continue to monitor the situation closely.
